What I Like to Eat

Anything and everything, from mochi to knitting needles.

What I like to do

Terrorize the local wildlife and the neighbors cats. Play hide and seek and run in circles at the beach. When my mommy worked at the groomers, I used to steal giant clumps of hair from under the groomers table and make nests with it in my kennel. I also incessantly lick everything. Sometimes mommy holds daddy down and he screams for her to stop like getting kisses from me is torture or something. On occasion I've also been known to drag old man Spirit across the floors by his tail. I like to look out the front window of my apartment and growl and bark at anyone that gets too close to my house. This can sometimes be tricky because my window is right next to the door to the building. It's a thankless job, but someone has to do it. One of my favorite things are car rides in the summer. Canoe Trips!Canoe Trips!

Where we'd go if I got to choose the destination of our next vacation

My family's camp in Maine. It's on a lake in the middle of the woods.I swim behind them when they forget me on canoe trips across the lake. I like to sit next to my parents on the rock they use to fish off of and harass the fish as they come out of the water. Sometimes I help them by relocating the bait, but I never spill any of it! I also like to sit on my family's laps while they sit in front of the fire.

How I came to be in the care of my owner

I was born in Puerto Rico, where they have a huge overpopulation of stray dogs called 'satos". I was found with my mother and my siblings in a garden behind a construction site. The man who found us called the local animal shelter and a lady from the shelter came and rescued us. She named us all after flowers in the garden. The shelter I was taken to has a partnership with a shelter in the US, in Salem, MA. The Salem Animal shelter receives most of it's dogs from Puerto Rico. So me and my sister Wisteria were shipped over to the US to start a new life. The first time I saw my mommy (Maggie) was at 8 pm in early December of 2005. She waited until everyone was done watching me and my sister in our kennel and asked to hold me. I laid on my back cradled in her arms like a baby. The worker there explained to my mom that my bottom jaw was shorter than my top by almost an inch, and that because I had no teeth at the time, it might be difficult for me to eat. To this day, my tongue hangs out of my mouth almost all of the time. She left that night promising to return the next day. By noon time the following day, I had already had three people try to adopt me. My mom showed up with her mother and the tubby, old man of a dog, Spirit, who I would eventually come to live with. Maggie held me and cried all the way back to her house. Her mother talked about how much her grandmother would have loved her. Maggie's gram had past away earlier in the spring and way her best friend. She loved to garden, and that's why they kept my name Iris (or Virus, as I have been known to be called on occasion).
